A WORD FROM
President Richard Carvajal
President's Update
November 2024
Dear Blazer Nation,
I hope you are doing well in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. If you feel like there is plenty to do and not enough time to do it, I share that sentiment. Please keep reading for storm updates, resources being offered, and some big things happening on campus.
Impact of Hurricane Helene
If you have stepped foot on campus, you know that Hurricane Helene had a huge impact. The trees we lost total more than 835, and some areas are still being inspected. Our softball and baseball fields sustained major damage, and work is underway to have repairs completed before their seasons start in January. We have four buildings that need roof repairs, and the list of damage goes on and on. But perhaps, the biggest impact is that to our students, faculty, and staff. The clock is ticking on the semester, and I know our students are feeling the pressure of classwork that still needs to be done. Our faculty are being flexible and working with students to ensure they are able to get those assignments completed. Our staff is working hard to catch up on their work while also supporting our faculty and students. I know this is a lot. Please reach out to the resources below if you need assistance. Together, we will get through this difficult time.
Fall Commencement & Grad Finale
Fall Commencement is just over a month away. Graduate School Commencement is set for Friday, December 13, and the Undergraduate Ceremony is on Saturday, December 14. Grad Finale had to be rescheduled following the hurricane, so the in-person event will be held on Tuesday, November 12 and Wednesday, November 13. Students can come to the VSU Bookstore and the 1st Floor of the Student Union to purchase their cap and gown, buy a class ring, learn about graduate school, join the 1906 Society, and much more. Discounts will be available. Commencement is one of my favorite days of the year, and I look forward to that big day in just a few weeks. You can learn more about Commencement and Grad Finale at the links below.
Lighting of the Palms
Get ready to officially kick off the holiday season at VSU with Lighting of the Palms. This year’s event is on Tuesday, December 3 at 6 p.m. Join us on the Front Lawn for music, games, holiday cheer, and of course an appearance by Santa Blaze. All students, faculty, staff, and the entire Valdosta-Lowndes County community are invited. I hope to see you there.
In Closing
I know how challenging these last few weeks have been, but your perseverance is inspiring. I am thankful for our students rising to the challenge, and our faculty and staff who are showing them unconditional support. This is what makes our university such a special place.
Go Blazers!
