A WORD FROM
President Richard Carvajal
President's Update
February 2025
Dear Blazer Nation,
The spring 2025 semester is well underway, and I hope you too enjoyed the rare snowfall last month. I am glad it has warmed back up, but I suspect that when we get to June or July, we will wish for another cold snow day. There is plenty happening on campus, and I have some updates to share with you.
Front Lawn Wireless
Our IT teams have been working for months to install wireless between buildings and in open spaces on campus. The biggest part of that starts this month. We will have crews working to install Wi-Fi across the Front Lawn. Construction crews will be around as this process begins, so please avoid the areas where they are working. The hope is for it to be online in March. We know our students love studying on The Front Lawn, and having wireless there will allow them to do that as often as they like.
Spring Commencement
Spring Commencement is still a few months away, but there are some important events and deadlines our graduating seniors need to know about. Those looking for full-time or part-time work, resume assistance, and professional networking can attend several events this month hosted by the Office of Career Opportunities and Volunteer Services. Also, Grad Finale, the one-stop-shop for our graduates to get everything they need to walk in May, is coming up March 4-5. You can see links below for both of these events along with a link for ceremony information. I look forward to celebrating our graduates and welcoming their friends and families to campus on May 9-10.
Campus Events
Spring semester is always busy with plenty of events happening on campus. The College of the Arts has music, theatre, and dance performances and shows from students and faculty, fundraising events like DRAWPROJECT and Dancing with the Stars, and also the South Georgia Film Festival is happening on campus next month. There are always dozens of student organization events for every interest and hobby. And the Undergraduate and Graduate Research Symposiums are held each April. It’s a chance to show off the research and classwork you have been involved in with your professors and classmates. There is still time to submit your work for consideration. The links for all these events and activities are below.
Blazer Athletics
Springtime on campus also means plenty of action for Blazer Athletics. Our men’s and women’s basketball teams are winding down their seasons and gearing up for the Gulf South Tournament next month. Our baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis teams are beginning their seasons, while our golf team is in the spring part of its season. I hope you will attend some of these events and support our hard working and talented student-athletes.
In Closing
Whether we think January and February are going by fast or not, Commencement and the end of the spring 2025 semester will be here before we know it. I encourage you to get involved and enjoy this beautiful time of year on campus.
Go Blazers!
Dr. Richard Carvajal
